My carb is running rich, blowing black soot out the back....the two barrel carb is in it and seems to be fine for me, I just want to slim it down. Anyway explain which screw is which to adjust to get this baby running better? Actually gets about 10mpg on the freeway now, but I'd like to fix this...Thanks!

10 mpg is pretty good.\nIs the air filter real dirty? That could cause it to run rich. Carbs don't just go out of adjustment... If you don't know how to fiddle with them then I would find someone who can. The norm is to screw the enrichner screws all the way in and then out 2 1/2 as a base setting. Otherwise grab a rebuild kit for it, download some instructions and have fun.

on the 2bbl IIRC out is leaner but it's been awhile. Just go a little at a time each way until it's running smooth. make sure the engine is good and hot and the choke is off. 10 mpg is about right for a 220. That is what mine used to get. an Aluminum intake and 4bbl will wake it up nicely.

Better mpg with a 4 barrel?

It is possible to get just as good or better mpg with a 4 barrel as long as you keep your foot outta it. The extra power of the secondary's will "wake it up" when you need to stomp on it.

The air idle screws are just for idle. The richness is controlled by the main jets. These jets can be replaced for a leaner fuel mix. Every carb has 6 systems. Frank
