New to Travcos: '72 270 questions

Unread post by broomeju » Sat May 13, 2017 11:01 pm

1st Post --- Recently acquired a Travco 270 with a 413. \nIt runs great. Needed some TLC but she's getting there.\nInterior all original except the floors.\nreally great shape all considering and drives straight down the road\n\ncouple of questions if anyone can help it will be most appreciated.\n\nOil: we did an oil change and used new oil Rotella T4 15W-40. With the engine burning some oil I thought going up to the 15W would make sense. But, the oil pressure gage is pegged at say 3/4 on the gage (except at low idle) --- any concerns about the oil pressure being too high? Friend told me if too high the oil bypasses the oil filter which would not be good I'd imagine. (Note: just replaced valve stem seals and now have zero smoke - used to smoke a lot right after starting -- and the motor drips no oil-- so I'm really not concerned about high oil consumption now )\n\nFuel gage: the gage does not work and I can't figure out how to get to the sender to troubleshoot. It looks to me like I'd have to drop the whole thank. Is there a trick that I'm not seeing? Can the sender be accessed from under the rear bed?\n\nBunk Anchors: there's a bunk that swings up and attaches to the ceiling and pivots on the portside wall. the wall seems to be made of a fiberboard material but the anchors were simply screwed in with woodscrews. what's the proper way to re-attach this bunk to the wall, to the ceiling ? \n\nAir pressure: what air pressure should I run the tires at (put new tires on the front and the rear are only 2 years old)\n\nShocks: the shocks appear to be completely gone --- but, I don't notice it riding bad like a car with bad shocks would. How important is it to have good shocks on an RV ?\n\nThis RV is incredibly cool\nIt is built like a tank and people love to come and check it out.\nLooking forward to getting it 100% but we're going to leave the "patina" well-worn look for now.\n\nThanks again for any suggestions regarding the above comments or on any other matters.

Welcome to the forum.\nYour oil pressure is probably fine. My 440 in the 76 runs at about the same point on the factory gauge. I have been running 20w50 oil with a zinc additive.\nFuel gauge could be wiring or the sender. Is your fresh water tank under the bed in the back? If it is the only way to get to the fuel sender would be to drop the tank.

Hello KB2:\nRotella is DIESEL oil. \nIt has detergent additives that the conventional oils do not have. \nIf you have Cummins or some other diesel, you are good. \nIf you have the 440, I would get that stuff out of there. \nGood luck !

As for the bunk mounting...\nMine is ''66 so not sure if exactly the same but wall mount hinges look like it...\nOn the wall the hinge does actually screw into a wooden upright behind the panel. \nMy screws are longer than what you have...\nOn the ceiling mine has a square flat metal tab welded to the frame above the ceiling panel. \nThe ceiling hanger screws through the panel with sheet metal fasteners to the tab above. \nOn the fuel sender service mine has access hole cut in floor \nNice coach keep up the good work.

Fellchase, I am not running Rotella. I am running a 20w50 automotive oil. Being in the south the temperature range is good for the heavier oil. I run an additive with zinc to keep the flat tappets happy. I have seen the Rotella and Delo run in gasoline engines for hundreds of thousands of miles without issues even though I have not done it myself.

I wish I could help with the hoses but I have the 440 and I believe the hoses are different.

The updated master parts list has a molded lower hose listed for the 413.\nhttp://travcoforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1029\nIt is down the list a little ways but the upper and lower listed there for the 440 fit my Mahal perfectly.

Thanks\nYes, that parts list is great and I've used it and should have let you all know that I already looked there.\nThat list really helped with the Mister Gasket #4367 Thermostat \nsolved overheating problems 100% \nCheap fix to a big problem!\nThe 413 radiator hoses are 2.5" I.D. and they are different from what's used on the 440's, unfortunately.
