1970 270 engine whining or humming over 40-50 mph.
Help! Engine belts broke on highway. Made it 5-7 miles with belts off the pulleys. May have ran hot between then. Not sure. Stopped to have mechanic take a look. alternator was loose and it caused belts to come off. This is what he said. I did see him wiggle the alternator. He tightened it up and we sat for about 20 mins with us to see if it was running hot. He said it was ok from he could tell. We got back on the highway and after about 30 miles it started humming or whining. A couple times in those 30 miles it also revved up by itself a couple times. We travelled another 2-4 miles before being spooked enough to stop. It didnt seem to have any trouble below 40 aside the revving a couple times. While it made the whining noise it was going up and down a Kentucky highway route 65. So I firsted noticed the whining/humming it was on the way up the hill. The previous owner said he had installed a clutch fan on the alternator. The alternator is also a GM. The only thing on the vehicle that isn't dodge. Help!

clutch fan is on the water pump not the alternator. might be the loose alt was making so much noise that you never heard the clutch fan engaging while climbing a hill before. I had thought that the original clutch fan was obsolete until recently. wonder what that part number is ???
