And so the journey begins...

Unread post by beemerdog » Sun Jul 10, 2016 6:52 am

Greetings from North Central Mass. Just took over keepership of a 1972 270. She is kind of all there and the bones looked good. Much has been dis assembled during the hunt for mices and birds. I look forward to first getting her empty and running; then helping her find her way home. As of right now its 107 miles door to door and I leave for vaca in another day. Upon my return there will be a trip or 2 with trailer and tools while getting paperwork and mechanicals in order. From there let the games begin..... Must say I have already learned a lot about Travcos and look forward to getting in deep and bringing Rosie as she is currently known as back into proper fettle. Thanks in advance for all the help and information\n Chip

a bit of news and oops I posted another request but in the wrong place....\nSo Rosie has a new starter and battery. The hi torque light weight starter had its connections to close to the block for my liking so off to the Autozone and in with the heavy new starter. She turns over but gets no spark. Points are pitted and the rubbing block seems excessively worn so I am going to replace them. I have the original part numbers from Dodge but cannot find current numbers that cross. So I am looking for replacement\nCAP\nROTOR\nPOINTS\nCONDENSER\nAll the info I can find seem to talk of electronic ignition upgrades but at this point all I want to do is get her running so I can make the journey home. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanking you all in advance

sorry for the cross post this should be here not in tech documents\nSo I started the pocess of getting Rosie running. New starter is in and cranking. The mini hi torque had its terminals just to close to the block for my liking. Autozone to the rescue with a regular remanufactured starter that is heavy but fits. Now on to the ignition.... Points were all pitted and it looks like the rubbing block is worn out. My dilemma is that I cant figure out what \npoints \ncondenser\ncap\nrotor\nto use in this fine old gal. I don't want to upgrade to electronic ignition yet what I need is to get her running.\nSo if anyone has already done this homework and will share.... Please and thank you!

Time for a bit of an update... Rosie is a runner!! cleaned up the points added a battery and vroom vroom she fired right up. Charges well and the lights work. Today I added some air to the tires I could get at and went to move her away from the fence she has been sitting by for a while. Sadly it all came to a screeching halt when the passenger rear tires came into view. All dry rotted and cracked. That is the way I suppose. This is only kind of bad as the brakes don't brake anyway. \nI have 5 19.5 rims that I will clean up and then get some rubber onto them so I can make her roll safe. From there it looks like a tow. I will see if there is anything obvious but its a hundred mile journey and 9000 pounds with no brakes just doesn't compute. Wish me luck and thanks for all the well wishes.\n\nTires\nBrakes and all....\n\nIts like a road going boat! A hole in the ozone into which one pours money...... :D
