'72 270 w/ 413 - Intermittent Power Loss
I have been chasing a problem that has me scratching my head.\nThe engine will lose power.\nIt will not stall completely but it will only idle.\nIf I get off the gas for about 10 seconds and then get back on it again it'll run well for several more hours.\nit never happens out on the road when cruising (even when going up long hills when engine systems would seem most "stressed") \n\nIt appears to only happen when:\n1) the engine is hot\n2) the engine has been running at load but then have slowed to an idle (ex. stopping to get gas/lunch/errand)\n3) typically happens when accelerating but sometimes happens under light load, too\n\nWhat I've done:\n1) cleaned fuel tank and lines and installed fuel/water separator (like on a boat - quart size filter element)\n2) installed new mechanical fuel pump\n3) rebuilt carb (Holley - set fuel levels, etc.)\n4) replaced old coil with new one ( this one did not require ballast resistor)\n5) cleaned ground where ECM unit mounts\n\nAny ideas what to check next ?

Do you have an EGR valve? Mine was hanging open at times when coming to a stop and caused an engine stall. I ended up blocking it off.

This sounds to me like you are boiling gas in the carb or in the gas line. Check your gas line and move it away from heat. At load (driving) you are moving enough gas that it dose not boil but when you slow down the lower volume of gas heat soaks and boils.

Do you run an electric fuel pump near the tank to push the gas up to the mechanical pump?

Thanks so much!!!!!\n\nSteel fuel line between mechanical fuel pump and carburetor was touching water pump body, etc. \n\nPulled fuel line up and away from hot surfaces, wrapped in with split open old water hose and problem is gone.

I wrapped mine with split wire loom cover.
