Welcome Gene and Amy !!\nI did the one on my 220 years ago. I have not messed with my current 270 but any heavy truck shop should be able to get the shoes relined. Just be careful with any hardware. My brakes guy here in Seattle told me to be careful on the drive shaft brakes if it gets applied and then stuck, the only way to get it off is to take the drive shaft u joint pin out and slide it off. \n\nMine is not applied and all the parts seem to be there but I am too scared to move the lever on the cab. Is there a way to get in there and make sure the springs/shoes are working properly without taking the whole thing off the drive shaft?

I looked at my "non-holding" park brake recently and it turns out the drum shoes are pretty much gone. Anyone know what the part number may be? I really doubt I will ever fix it but if I had the parts I may spend a Saturday on it.

Shoes can be relined, BUT take "care" of hardware as parts are not available !!!

I know back in the 90's I was still able to get parts from Dodge but when they went bankrupt and screwed all thier parts suppliers, much like GM, all that stuff disappeared.

Can someone explain a simple question about the e brake mechanism? Based on the diagram it seems like when you pull the lever which tensions the cable it would pull the shoes in and away from the drum. I must be missing something....

Also..... 77, how did you get the drum off? I was under the assumption that the whole donut assembly had to be taken off the drive shaft- or does the drum just slide aft after you take the bolts off?\n\nRob

No the drum does not just slide off...Upon closer examnation of the "brake" it appears that after the removal of the 4 nuts/bolts retaining the drive shaft. There is a center spline that the drum is pressed onto and held in place by that large recessed nut. Has to be a way for the power from the rear of the transmission spline to engage the drum to turn the attatched drive shaft..As it seems to be the same layout as a AMC Javelin (Had one) rear brake drum that was also assisted in not spinning on the spline and rounding them off. A keway was also used...Presume a wheel puller will be necessary. If no keyway, then it wasnt felt to be needed.\nThe "cam" action of the lever that sets the brake is the real application of power. Working like an automotive cable emergency brake. The knurled knob at the top of the lever was for more pressure or tightening the cable adjustment. No wheel cylinders/brake fluid involved,,,all mechanical...HTH & IMHO\nBBB
