Re: Travco 270 lost the Hydrovac brake booster

Took it for a quick test drive. Night and day. it never stopped right since I got it. It stops perfect now. No more pumping the brakes. I think I may change the other one for good measure.

Well did a trip this weekend. Went 200 miles, no issue. ON the way home the brake light started coming on but it I hit the pedal just alittle it would go out. I stopped and checked fluid, it was actually over full. When I took the cover off the master fluid poured out a little. I drove the rest of the way home with light going on but it stops fine.Gotta be one of 3 possiblities.
1)Still have air in the line
2)Reman booster is defective
3)the other booster is going bad.
Guess I'll start by bleeding the brakes first.

I am out of ideas. Either the new booster is defective, the other booster is weak or the Proportioning valve is bad...but which ??

Good post! I suspect you have air in the system somewhere. I've had a difficult time in the past bleeding my '74 270 but was able to eventually get a good bleed with a pressure bleed from the master down to the booster, and then all the way to the wheel cylinders. I have a theory that because there is so much brake line and it is of a larger diameter than most cars I've worked on, the trapped air just floats back up to its original position when you stop to refill the master during the bleed. With the pressure method you have a constand flow of fluid from a pressure pot to the MC so there is no interuption and no opportunity for the air the float back up. Motive products makes a system for exactly this, however I made my own from a garden sprayer and a steel plate; worked very well for me.

But... Like you I now have a bad wheel seal and need to replace it. Thanks for the NAPA part no.

Well I changed the other booster. I drained a quart of brake fluid out of it it was leaking so badly. It was shot. Did not fix the problem but the installation instructions say to remove the proportioning valve brake light switch before bleeding or damage to the switch can occur...Oops...Maybe that is my problem. It stops fine.

I replaced the seal today and I also believe my leak was caused by the previous one not being installed far enough in. I was able to drift the new one in about 1/4" more than the one I installed last time.

Well I must have had a air bubble or the switch was sticking. The light went out and I put 400 miles on it this weekend towing my ATVs and the light never came on. It stops fine and the wheel seal looks good.

Call me crazy but I can't find anything that remotely looks like brake booster drum on my 76. Unless it is integral to the pump and reservoir I don't have one (or two).

Was there such a design in 1976?

I'm not completely sure about the '76 but it's probably the same as my '74. The boosters are located mid way between the front and rear axles in betwwen the frame rails and are about the size of a paint can.

Robc,
Somewhere mid 75 I think(info is spotty as Travco used old Chassis and sold them as newer models)Dodge went to Hydroboost which is run off the Power steering. If yours ia a 76, It probably has hydroboost which IMHO is a much better setup and btw would make a future Cummins swap much easier. If you look inside the drivers side wheel well your master cyl is probably attached to it and has lines to the Power steering pump. In fact I have never seen a Travco with hydroboost myself so if anyone wants to post some good pics of the setup that would be cool.
