1972 270 axle swap
I swapped the axles in my 270 and i thought i would put some info on it here. The donor was a 1978 georgie boy motorhome with a dodge chassis. The original plan was to swap the hubs with the 8 lug dana 70 but they did not fit the dana HD so swapped in the entire dana 70. The axle was a direct fit. Both axles had the same diameter 35 spline axles. The only difference i see is the axle tube diameter and some bearing diameters.\n
\n \nNext i swapped in the front axle but it wasn't a direct fit. I originally wanted to swap only the 8 lug hubs and disc brakes but the backing plate mounts were not the same so i swapped the entire axle. The leaf springs on the travco are 3"s wide and the leaf springs on the donor axle were 3.5 wide. I had to egg out the the axle center pin a 1/4" on each outer side to fit the travco spring width. The shocks on the donor axle mount to a plate on top of each lea spring. I swapped those plates onto the travco springs wich also helped take up the slack of the ubolt width. The axle then bolted right up.\n \n \n \nMy plans for next weekend are getting new brake lines made and im installing a hydro boost. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

The steering was identical to the old axle and bolted right up.

The later disk brake axles where usually a little higher of a rating.

Re: 1972 270 axle swap
The front axle looked almost the same so im guessing the rating is almost the same. The rear is less since its a 70 instead of the 70HD.

Re: 1972 270 axle swap
I think the front axle went from 3500 lb rating to 4000 lb rating. not a big difference. I think the spring width was larger on the later models
