Travco 270 Rear Springs

Unread post by Acesneights » Sat Mar 15, 2014 11:54 am

Well, we all need them at some point. Now for the Travco 270 (I would say most models but do your own homework, mine is a 1975 M500) the part # is 34-139. This number is Triangle Spring but it is a standardized part number across many brands. I "think" the 220 was 34-137 or maybe that was just the main leaf.\nI have been hunting around for a spring for my pass side rear(always the first to go due to the immense weight of the Onan).\nBasically no matter where you go looking at 424$+shipping and a 3-6 week lead time for the factory to make it. I found a spring shop that the guy really knows his stuff. He was able to cross it to an 8 leaf with the same spec(actually the 8 leaf was 4800lb vs factory 9 leaf at 4500). He can get it for around 270+ shipping however I am going to have him put an extra leaf in mine to compensate the genset. If it sits too high pulling the leaf out is no big deal so for the 50$ extra I'd rather have it.\nI will follow up in a few weeks when the order is complete and I can verify that it fits and is good quality.

Ok, placed the order today. 365$ shipped for one. It was like 700$ for both but money is tight right now and the pass side sping always goes on these first.\nThe new spring should be here in a few days. It is 8 leaf vs 9 but like I said thicker leaves and actually a slighty higher load rating...\nAs soon as I can confirm it's right I will post the respective info. He said there is a good supply of them vs having the 9 leaf stacks custom made.

It came yesterday. It looks right and it's mighty beefy. It will probably sit just right since they tend to lean because of the Genset. We'll see.

ok, so this weekend was unsuccessful. The new spring did not fit but damn it was close. It looks to be good quality but the problem arose(and I didn't even realize it until I tried to install it) was the Travco spring has what is called( I think) a Berlin Eye. Basically the Travco spring mainleaf bends down at the end of the main leaf. The new spring did not. It was straight. So basically the eyelet on the Travco spring is even with the mainleaf where as the New Spring was above it. I could not get the front bolt in. \nThe amazing part was I have no reason to believe that the spring bolts have ever been out and that means they have been in for almost 40 yrs. I got the LP tank and Gas tank right there so no torches. Ha, they came right out. No issue at all. Even the ubolts came off but the threads looked kinda beat up so I had new ones made. I ended up having to put the old spring back in because I didn't want to leave 14,000 lbs on a jackstand during a noreaster(tommorow). Spoke with the spring shop today. His CAD sheets didn't show that but he was able to find the proper mainleaf so he is shipping it out asap no extra charge. So far he has been great to deal with.

Also if you have the rear sway bar, you don't have to unbolt it. It will rotate back when you take the U bolts out on the axle but as you can see in the pics above, I used a porta Power to jack it back around. Also I had to use a poarta power to move the axle to line back up with the centerbolt. I recommend having a porta power on hand.

Well, beat the rain. 3hrs flat. The new main leaf he sent me was the exact right one except a little thicker. I took the main leaf that did not work and whacked the ends off it and added it to the stack. She's all back together.\nSpecial thanks to Bob from ATS spring in Souderton Pa. This guy really knows his stuff and was super great to work with.\nHe can easily get more of these and in future orders can make sure the spring has the correct main leaf before it leaves the shop. This was a bit of trial and error to find something that was still in production and readily available vs a special order that can take months. He was super fast shipping(2 days at no extra cost). Now that we know what we need he can whip it right up.\n215-799-0900\nMy recommendation is to add a leaf and go with 9 leaves as the original. I would also recommended just doing both. I cheaped out and did one due to finances but I will do the other side as soon as $$ allows.\n\nhttp://www.autoandtrucksprings.com/

changing out the rubber mor ride blocks on the rear of my '70 mahal this week (along with upper and lower wheel cylinders). it looks easier than swapping out leaf springs even though the cost is about the same. however,,,,,,it's the second set in the past 30 yrs. A labor of love these thing are
