What's behind this?

Unread postby 77Travco on Mon Feb 10, 2014 11:31 am

Anyone ever taken this down? (see pics) What's behind the padded header above the bed in the rear of a Travco 270? Is there an access hole to the rear clearance lights wiring, etc?

You will be really lucky if it is an access hatch. My 76 270-crapper in the back has a solid piece of fiberglass with no way to get to the clearance lights without unscrewing the hole curved piece. I will be cutting holes/hole in mine just for access to the clearance lights.

I kind of figured that... I think it's there so that I can bang my head into something soft in the middle of the night.
I don't need to gain access back there but I guess that I could cut an access hole if I ever did and then just use the pad to cover it up.

That looks like something someone might have made along the way. The fiberglass headliner under it IS removable but it's alot of work. Messing with the rear window is not something I would do unless it was absolutely necessary. The rear window gaskets were made with a pull ring for emergency exit and are no longer made. The only thing you can do is buy a front windshield gasket from Foretravel and cut it down for the back but you lose the safety ring.

Mine is not a Mahal. 1976 270, door up front, bunk bed set up aft of the kitchen forward of bathroom. two big windows on either side at the bunks.

I will be rewiring all my lighting inside and out to LED including the clearance lights. Anybody have a good way to do it besides buying all new clearance lights? I am not adverse to buying new ones but If I could salvage the old fixtures and put LED's in the them. That would be cheaper.

Biggest thing with the clearance lights is finding new fixtures with a separate ground wire. Even the factory ones did not have that. Travco did a half ass job of just shoving a ground wire under the ground strip of the fixture. I don't think retro fitting the old fixtures its worth it. They were not good fixtures to begin with. I'm gonna eventually put Mack Bullets on mine.
