Hello- We are New owners of a 1974 960 series 270 Travco!

Unread post by jayandrobyn74travco » Sat May 09, 2015 12:31 am

Hello to everyone! We are Jay and Robyn, and we reside in Missouri and Arkansas.. and recently bought the Travco 2 hours north of New Orleans... It was and has been quite an adventure getting it back up North.. we have lots of questions, and are looking for those whom are already familiar with where to get parts, brakes, wiring harness... a ladder..lol. We do know about Alretta parts. The Travco overall is in really good shape, but we would like to find a mechanic to do the breaks close to Missouri or Arkansas... Fell free to contact us at jayandrobyntravco@gmail.com Much thanks! Jay and Robyn! Pics coming soon!

Welcome!\nBrakes are a common issue on old motorhomes that have sat for long periods of time without use. Post up pics and year model info when you can.

jayandrobyn74travco, In response to your PM message... I am also posting info here for the benefit of other/future Travco owners.\n\nOriginal tire size was 8R19.5 but many owners of these old motorhomes have switched to the newer size of 225/70-19.5. My 1977 model 270 is currently running the 225/70-19.5's without issues but the rear tires will sometimes kiss slightly at the bottom.\n\nBrake work can get expensive fast on Travco's mostly due to the labor involved. I believe your early 70's 270 has the HydroVac system with front drums. I have not dealt with that setup as my 77 model uses Hydroboost with front discs.\n\nI called your number this morning but there was no answer... Post up questions on the forum so others can help out.

Welcome !!\nHave you read some of the brake threads and Parts threads ? Your Travco is very similar to mine and I have posted a few threads on brakes and parts. Yours should be Dual hydravac with drum in the back and disc in the front. Most of the parts are available from NAPA. Feel free to start a thread in the 270 section or brake section and I as well as others will try to answer your questions.\nYou can check this sub forum out for starters.\nhttp://www.travcoforum.com/viewforum.php?f=21\n\nThis is my thread. also take note of part numbers as they are probably the same for you.\nhttp://www.travcoforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=10

77 Travco... \nWhen I had the 1976 Mahal, I did not notice a/the hydroboost on it. \nNothing was seen when I cut it up....an ordinary master cylnder that was replaced.\nIs it a fairly easy alteration to add a hydroboost to my 1974 with front discs?...\nStill inthe shop getting braked!\nBBB\nPS. FWIW I too called, 20 rings and no answer...Whats with this????

I think it would just be a matter of bolting on a hydroboost power steering pump and a booster unit at the master cylinder. Could probably even raid the parts off of a GM truck and make them fit.

77Travco... would you happen to have the numbers of the hydro boost unit/set up and a parts listing? \nAs I am already way too deep into this unit, a little bit more for more braking pleasure is worth the effort..\nBTW, what thickness spacer and material are you using with the wider rear tires between the rims?\nBBB

I have no idea as far as parts numbers for the hydroboost setup goes.\n\nI am not running a spacer between the rears... check out the pic below. See the clean strip where the tires contact each other? I can see daylight between them when parked but they obviously must touch when the bottom of the tires flex.

I am still running the 8R 19.5. Bridgestone still makes them as do a couple other companies.
