Body Removal

Unread post by RobC » Wed May 13, 2015 1:39 pm

Been trying to figure out how to pull the entire body and floor off my chassis to put on a more modern chassis (air brakes, 10 lug wheels, etc) but it looks like the floor support ribs on the sides are integral to the steel ribs on the inside of the fiberglass.\n\nI can't see a way to do it without using a cutting torch and welding new ribs onto a newer chassis. While I am a sucker for insanely complicated, long and expensive projects, This seems like too much work even for me.\n\nRob

Might be easier to find later model axles that can be bolted up to the springs. I have been wondering if there are a different set of hubs that would fit on the spindles with a more modern lug pattern.

Figuring out an axle swap would solve two of the biggest complaints: the rim/tire issues and the antique brake set up.\n\nFinding out a later model straight/dually axle setup should not be that difficult but these units are to unique to have the support that I am spoiled with on my cars.

There are: early 90's rigs such as Gulstreams came with Dana 70 HD axles and hubs with 8 and I think 10 lug patterns:\n\nWould make getting tires a lot easier. that's a pretty big job for a shade tree mechanic like me so the cost gets prohibitive.\n\nRob

It would be nice to find something that would go in with 4 wheel disc brakes.

The make aftermarket disc brake conversions for Dana 70 8 lug axles. So on a 220 would not be hard. As far as the 270 maybe later model RV axles or something from Ford Superduty 10 lug or maybe one of those Hino or Isuzu med duty trucks I was thinking.
