Gear Vendor is a very nice option if you can grab a used one. They are a hard hit new...From what I understand the unit itself is universal then you can buy whatever adapter you need from GV.

I'm on the hunt around here (Western Washington) for a Gear Vendors unit-one yard I know of in particular has at least a dozen old Dodge chassis motorhomes, so I think with a little patience and luck I can get one for about $400. Of course, I have to pull it, but it makes it worth it!

It will probably be tomorrow or next week before I can get out to that particular yard- it is in the eastern part of Snohomish County

Okay- spoke with Gear Vendors. The motorhomes have their own 'special' casting due to the fact that the factory parking brake set-up gets replaced by a Bendix unit. You can adapt one from a P/U 727 trans, but it takes a bunch of parts and work that would run in the ball park of $2K. Finding one on a motorhome? Odds are low since the Dodge motorhome unit is the one they've sold the least of, but it could happen...

I would not be to concerned about the driveshaft brake. It's pretty useless anyway. At best it might stop you at about 2 mph.
I chock my wheels if parked on an incline(which for an RV'er is taboo anyway)

OK Gang...
Now I'm obsessed with the idea of an Eaton 2 speed axle. I've done some digging around, and have read that the "medium duty" axles that they made for box type trucks and "light" dump trucks were available starting with a 3.55 x 4.33 gear combination.

I suppose that one could change ring and pinion gears in those to make a useable gear set for what an individual might need, concerning the area that they live in/ travel to.

I wanna find something in the range of 3.55 and 4.56 or so... I figure those would be ideal for the fat areas of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, etc... and the 4.56 would do just right in West VA, PA, Delaware, etc...

Anyone know of a decent truck boneyard?

when i picked up my Travco last month i thought of the manual two speed rear end...they are out there on a lot of old trucks and bus's.
fortunately my boss was scraping his 1980 service truck and it just happened to have an under/over drive unit so i grabbed it. 8-)
It sits as a nice stand alone unit so i think i am going to look at mounding it back by the rear end.


and there must be a few of these units kicking around as well.

Wow. Never saw one of those. The price is even funnier. I'm tempted to fill out that order form and see what happens...lol
A Gear Vendors is dang near 3k$.

when you look at them they might be a bit light duty. :shock:
but i wonder if the company went on to make heavier units.
this is the one i got from work...i will just make/get a spline shaft with universal joint couple on it for the female end. 8-)
