Leaking rear axle
After topping up the gear oil in the rear end and taking a trip noticed leaking oil. How can I determine if this needs a replacement gasket or bead of silicone at the axle to hub surface vs. needing new oil seal?
Both sides are doing this.
Brake work last year I thought the mechanic doing the work had replaced the oil seals. At least on one side I’m sure he did but that one is leaking, too.
Any thoughts on next step in investigation and eventually fixing this?
My 1st thought was slide the axles out clean them up and seal with silicone. But of the oil seal is leaking where’s the oil going to go if it can’t come through the path it is currently taking? Certainly don’t want oil in the brakes.

Slide the axles out, clean and silicone or gasket the ends of the axles. The oil you see leaking is the oil that lubricates your rear wheel bearings. Check to make sure the vent on the differential is clear. If it is plugged there could be pressure building up and forcing the oil through the weak spot.

Those cone washers will also leak if the threads under them are not RTV'd when installed.
I used gaskets, but red Permatex is OK.
Check the diff oil level

Use " CAUTION " when removing cones !! Remove axles clean hub & axle face, silicone or gasket the ends of the axles, put some white grease in the stud holes or on cones, in & OUT - - cones are obsolete parts - - you are asking for trouble if silicone /gasket sealer sticks to the cone - - YOU WILL DAMAGE THEM on next removal !!! GUARANTEED !!

I did learn to whack the axle end fairly hard with a hand sledge (as per FSM!) to pop the old ones loose.
I also dug 1.5" of sludge out of the bottom of the diff (and cleaned with kerosene), and the oil was like chocolate...

Perhaps this is it. No tube. Prior owner improvised hydraulic leveling system and perhaps removed and never reinstalled vent tube!?
