Improving "rough" gas mileage.

Unread postby badbillybiker on Thu Nov 06, 2014 7:05 am

A question or two on the dynamics of air resistance....
How much of a fuel savings or increase in gas mileage would one get if one,
or both air conditioner units were removed (obviously) from the roof?
Yes I have the alternative answer (really a budget way to go) to the removal of both ...
How about a streamline cap/cover for those large outside mirrors (2 square feet of restance minimum).
Kind of like "Madonna's" golden pointed hooter covers...
What would a "chin" spoiler do for the mileage?
What would Full wheel covers for the air catching rear tires in improving mileage..
Tractor Trailers are doing it more and more often (Covering the rear wheels)...?
I have but did not install the large covered roof locker that Travco offered for more storage space.
from my 76 Mahal..? for that obvious wind resistance reason. (Free to whoever comes for it!)
Looking for ways to get a better mpg besides new carb, harder tires etc. Any "input on this??
These are thoughts I get when sitting about looking at what to do next on a work in progress.

I thought about this sort of stuff when I first got my Travco but then I realized...
Motorhomes don't travel everyday year round so it's a trade off to take your RV home with you. Full timer RVers may only move their coach a few hundred miles every few months or so. The fuel cost to get it there is not as big of a deal as being on the road everyday like an 18 wheeler.
It's basically like pushing a house down the road at interstate speeds... If you must improve the fuel mileage, slow down to about 60mph and enjoy the scenery.

Overdrive is about the only thing that's gonna improve MPG short of a Cummins swap.
