Onan generator removal from 270?
Have any of you removed the original Onan from a 270? If so, how did you do it?\n I'm not sure that I need to remove mine, but thought that it might be easier to check for any needed repairs. Mine is original and has not been run for 35 years (and I haven't tried to run it yet). At first glance, it looks like a very heavy PITA, so thought I'd ask first...\n To be clear, if the gen will run reliably, I would want to put it back in, if removed.

What year is your 270? Nessie's Onan is a power drawer but she is a 76. It slides out for maintenance\n.

Mine is a 1971 270. Doesn't appear to be on a drawer.\nLooks like this (sorry not zoomed out very far). Also, sorry, can't seem to keep the pic from being upside down.\n

EEeewww...sorry... got a little dizzy looking at the genset upside down...My 74 has the same unit but the band cover is missing. It looks like a 6000w cck onan. The gen IS the starter until the unit fires then it becomes the generator. Make sure the fuel pump is working and have a good battery... I think it's easier in rather than out to service unless the motor is blown. Make sure the gen cable is plugged into the rv power outlet. Give it a whirl. I beat my brains out until I plugged in the RV cable and got my lights. If pulled and money isnt too much of a prob, I would goto a honda portable, lighter, more efficient and you can move all over and place in the original spot to run the ac while going down the hi-way... JMO..\nBTW, there are loads of manuals on/in this site including your model genset...and no oil filter & uses non-detergent oil.\nBBB

BBB,\n Have you had any troubles with the E10 gas in your generator (I'm assuming you still have your Onan)?\n I love the Honda idea, but if I can get this Onan to work, I'll have that much more dough to spend on something else for the Travco

As I am clueless as to the ethanol? content of the gas I\n buy... my main schtick is cheap gas... It is usually 87\noctane with other octanes sometimes higher dependent\nupon pricing...engine runs fine... as does the genset.\nThe only caveat I can think of is higher consumption due to\nless efficient or lower octane?... Don't really care as 8 mpg is enough\nand higher is gooder... If the close fuel consumption is needed I have \nit and will dig those figures up if you want and will help you \nFWIW\nBBB\nYes... mine is a 6KW CCK Onan

Thanks BBB. I'm not worried about consumption or efficiency, just functionality and maintenance.\nAlso, I posted a separate E10 topic for generators.

My 1977 model 270 does not have a slide out genset. Sure wish it did... would make changing the points easier.

Maybe the slide out set up was only for the Mahal? I do love having it. Makes oil changes and other service a breeze.

Re: Onan generator removal from 270?
Me thinks the slideout was optional IF you wanted to pay for that convenience....\nMy 1976 270 2+2 Mahal had NO slideout.....BUT it did have a screen door!\nI can change my oil without any problem. Same for the air filter and this model\nhas no oil filter. Run it until warm, then drain. Refill with non-detergent/straight\noil. I havent had to set the points yet @ 1000+ hours... fires & runs just fine...\nbesides, with a 100 gallon gas tank..who cares about efficency, i sure don't...\nBBB
