Class 4 towing reciever hitch options?

Unread post by Zed » Tue Aug 15, 2017 12:36 pm

I'm likely going to try to tow a 1973 International Scout 2 about 500 miles on mostly flat roads for a friend. The Scout is listed at 3600 lbs. weight and I'm guessing another 2000 for the Uhaul trailer. My stock hitch has a sticker on it that says 3500 max and I'm well beyond that so I think I need to upgrade my trailer hitch. Anyone done this and could recommend a good hitch to buy? Its for a 1971 270 with a 413. I may need to do some wiring to add a signals junction box for the trailer lights so if anyone has any info on that that would be helpful too. Thanks.

Reese makes a universal Class 3/4 hitch that works on the Travco. I put one on mine. I will look up the model numeber and get back to you. My question is why Not flat tow it? If the Scout is 4WD all you would have to do is get a tow bar and put the transfer case in neutral.

I was thinking "flat tow" it as well. If it's 2WD just drop the driveshaft. If it's been sitting for a long time then the tires may not be up to the trip though.

The Scout is a restoration project that has been sitting at least a decade. Flat tires, possible seized hubs and who knows what else. Flat towing is not a option sadly.\n\nPlease hit me up with the Reese part number ASAP I need to order it tonight to stay on schedule. I'll probably wing it with some measurements but a for sure will work part would be golden.\n\nThanks.

Ok I'm finding this is going to be difficult to ID. Available for 1971 D300 pickup but nothing so far in the M300 and getting tech details about individual hitches like how far apart their brackets are isn't online.

The 270 would have the RM400 chassis which later became the M500.\n\nThis is the receiver I used\nhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CQOIR8/re ... UTF8&psc=1

Thanks for the reply but I need a class IV. I am leaning towards getting this put on by a specialty shop the multi fits dont seem to go higher then class III.
